• potent mitogen for retinal pigment epithelial cells & vascular smooth muscle cells
• effects of betacellulin are probably mediated by the EGF receptor & other related receptors

• contains 1 EGF-like domain

• betacellulin: secreted, extracellular space
• probetacellulin: cell membrane, single-pass type 1 membrane protein

Expression

• synthesized in several tissues & tumor cells
• predominantly expressed in pancreas & small intestine

Pathology

• betacellulin from beta cells could play a role in the vascular complications associated with diabetes
