Function
- role in dendritic cell & neuron differentiation
- anti-tumor activity
Structure
- belongs to the NDRG family
Compartment
- cytoplasm, perinuclear region
- perinuclear in neurons
Alternative splicing
named isoforms=5
Expression
- expressed in brain, heart, skeletal muscle, salivary gland > kidney, liver
- expressed in dendritic cells, but not in other blood cells
- specifically expressed during dendritic cell differentiation (in vitro)
- Isoforms 1 & 2 are present in brain neurons
- expression is low in fetal brain & increases during brain post-natal development
Pathology
- generally not expressed in tumor cell lines
- not expressed or strongly down-regulated in various cancers, including astrocytoma, meningioma, liver cancer, pancreatic cancer
- found in pathological brain lesions of Alzheimer disease
- isoforms 1 & 2 are up-regulated in Alzheimer disease (at protein level)
