• peripherin can self-assemble or co-assemble with neurofilaments to form intermediate filaments

Expression

• expressed predominantly in peripheral nervous system
• also expressed in central nervous system:
  • spinal motor neurons
  • sensory cranial nerve nuclei
  • small interneurons

• the major intermediate filament protein in PC12 cells
