- repairs alkylated DNA & RNA containing 1-methyladenine & 3-methylcytosine by oxidative demethylation
- strong preference for double-stranded DNA
- low efficiency with single-stranded substrates
- requires molecular oxygen, alpha-ketoglutarate & iron
- activated by ascorbate
Cofactor: binds 1 Fe+2 per subunit
