Function

• major role in regulating hemoglobin oxygen affinity as a consequence of controlling 2,3-DPG concentration
• has mutase & phosphatase activities, albeit diminished

• homodimer
• belongs to the phosphoglycerate mutase family, BPG- dependent PGAM subfamily

Pathology

• glycation of Lys-159 in hyperglycemic diabetic patients inactivates the enzyme
