Introduction
Chronic hyperglycemia may result in non-enzymatic glycation of proteins with accumulation of AGE pigments. These AGE pigments may accumulate in extracellular proteins with slow turnover, i.e collagen. Hemoglobin A1c is probably the best known example of non-enzymatic glycation.
