Function
- common junctional plaque protein
- membrane-associated plaques are architectural elements in a strategic position to influence the arrangement & function of both the cytoskeleton & the cells within tissue
- presence of gamma catenin in both the desmosomes & in the intermediate junctions suggests that it plays a role in structure & function of submembranous plaques
- interacts with desmoglein 1
- interacts with MUC1
Structure
- homodimer
- belongs to the beta-catenin family
- contains 9 ARM repeats
Compartment
- cell junction, adherens junction, desmosome
- cytoplasm, cytoskeleton, peripheral membrane
- cytoplasmic in a soluble & membrane-associated form
Pathology
- defects in JUP are the cause of
Genetics
gene locus: 17q21
