• membrane-associated plaques are architectural elements in a strategic position to influence the arrangement & function of both the cytoskeleton & the cells within tissue
• presence of gamma catenin in both the desmosomes & in the intermediate junctions suggests that it plays a role in structure & function of submembranous plaques
• interacts with desmoglein 1
• interacts with MUC1
