Introduction
Staphylococcus spp other than Staphylococcus aureus
Laboratory
- coagulase test is negative*
- Staphylococcus coagulase negative DNA
* Staphylococcus aureus distinguished from other Staphylococci by the production of coagulase (coagulase test)
Clinical significance
- coagulase-negative Staphylococci are generally non-pathogenic organisms
Management
- stop IV antibiotics for coagulase-negative staphylococcal bacteremia if single positive culture with no metastatic or catheter site infection or indwelling prosthetic devices[2]
- 5 days of IV antibiotics for coagulase-negative staphylococcal bacteremia with positive blood cultures 2 days apart
- 7-28 days of IV antibiotics for complicated coagulase-negative staphylococcal bacteremia
- daptomycin/vancomycin (for methicillin-resistant infection)
- anti-staphylococcal penicillin or cefazolin for methicillin-sensitive infection
