Function
- role in controlling transcriptional activity of MYOD1, ensuring that expanding myoblast populations remain undifferentiated
- transcriptional repression via muscle-specific E-box occupancy by homodimers
- negatively regulates bHLH-mediated transcription through an N-terminal repressor domain (putative)
- regulator of acinar cell function, stability, & identity
- required for normal organelle localization in exocrine cells & for mitochondrial Ca+2 transport
- regulator of gene expression in several different embryonic & postnatal cell lineages
- binds to the E-box consensus sequence 5'-CANNTG-3'
- forms homodimers or heterodimers with TCF3 gene products E12 & E47 - these dimers bind to the E-box site
- heterodimer with MYOD1 does NOT bind target DNA
Structure
- lacks a classic transcription activation domain
- N-terminal region capable of inhibiting heterologous activators
- contains 1 basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) domain
Compartment
Expression
- expressed in brain, liver, spleen, skeletal muscle
