Function
- regulatory role in sperm development
- regulation of fibrous sheath assembly by supporting formation of disulfide bonds during sperm tail morphogenesis
- may also be required to rectify incorrect disulfide pairing & generate suitable pairs between fibrous sheath constituents
- can reduce disulfide bonds in vitro in the presence of NADP & thioredoxin reductase
Structure
contains 1 thioredoxin domain
Compartment
- cytoplasm
- in ejaculated spermatozoa, localizes in the caudal region of the head to the end of the principal piece
Alternative splicing
named isoforms=2
Expression
- testis-specific
- only expressed during spermiogenesis
- prominent in round & elongating spermatids
