Function
- may play a role in organizing microtubules for the centrosome/spindle pole during mitosis
- may contribute to regulation of chromosome segregation & cytokinesis
Structure
- belongs to the protein kinase superfamily, Ser/Thr protein kinase family, Aurora subfamily
- contains 1 protein kinase domain
Compartment
- chromosome, cytoplasm, cytoskeleton, spindle
- distributes in the condensed chromosomes during prophase to metaphase
- after entering anaphase, dissociates from separated chromosomes & a redistributes to midzone microtubules
- remains in the midbody during cytokinesis
Alternative splicing
named isoforms=3
Expression
- isoform 1 & isoform 2 are expressed in testis
- elevated expression in a subset of cancer cells such as hepG2, HuH7 & HeLa cells
- expression is maximum at M phase
Pathology
- defects in AURKC are the cause of infertility with multi-tailed spermatozoa & excessive DNA
