• activated by stress-related extracellular stimuli such as H2O2, arsenite, anisomycin TNF alpha, & to a lesser extent PMA & the Ca+2 ionophore A23187
• in vitro, activated by SQSTM1
• phosphorylated on Thr-182, its regulatory phosphorylation site located on the T-loop/loop 12
