• key protease responsible for removal of the invariant chain from MHC class II molecules
• specificity is in part similar to cathepsin L & cathepsin N, but with much less activity on Z-Phe-Arg-|-NHMec, & more activity on Z-Val-Val- Arg-|-Xaa
