Function
- catalyzes sulfate conjugation of many hormones, neurotransmitters, drugs & xenobiotic compounds
- sulfonation increases water solubility of most compounds, & thus their renal excretion, but may also result in bioactivation to form active metabolites.
- sulfonates hydroxysteroids including DHEA to DEA-sulfate
- isoform 1 preferentially sulfonates cholesterol
- isoform 2
- avidly sulfonates pregnenolone
- does not sulfonate cholesterol
3'-phosphoadenylyl sulfate + an alcohol = adenosine 3',5'-bisphosphate + an alkyl sulfate
Structure
belongs to the sulfotransferase 1 family
Compartment
Alternative splicing
named isoforms=2
Expression
- high expression in placenta, prostate & trachea
- lower expression in the small intestine & lung
