Function

• catalyzes sulfate conjugation of many hormones, neurotransmitters, drugs & xenobiotic compounds
• sulfonation increases water solubility of most compounds, & thus their renal excretion, but may also result in bioactivation to form active metabolites.
• sulfonates hydroxysteroids including DHEA to DEA-sulfate
• isoform 1 preferentially sulfonates cholesterol
• isoform 2
  • avidly sulfonates pregnenolone
  • does not sulfonate cholesterol
