Function

  • transfers sialic acid from the donor of substrate CMP-sialic acid to galactose containing acceptor substrates
  • alpha-2,6-sialyltransferase activity toward oligosaccharides that have the gal-beta-1,4-GlcNAc sequence at the non-reducing end of their carbohydrate groups
  • weak or no activities toward glycoproteins & glycolipids
CMP-N-acetylneuraminate +  beta-D-galactosyl-1,4-N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosamine <--> CMP + alpha-N-acetylneuraminyl-2,6-beta-D-galactosyl-1,4- N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosamine

Kinetic parameters:

  • KM=0.74 mM for gal-beta-1,4-GlcNAc-beta-O-octyl
  • KM=0.71 mM for gal-beta-1,4-GlcNAc
  • KM=0.48 mM for lacto-N-neotetraose
