Function
- cross-linked envelope protein of keratinocytes
- first appears in the cell cytosol, but ultimately becomes cross-linked to membrane proteins by transglutaminase
- all that results in the formation of an insoluble envelope beneath the plasma membrane
- can function as both amine donor & acceptor in transglutaminase-mediated cross-linkage
Structure
- the N-terminus is blocked
- belongs to the cornifin (SPRR) family
Compartment
Expression
- suprabasal layers of squamous-differentiated tissues such as epidermis, esophagus, tongue & trachea
- expressed during differentiation of squamous cells
- induced by carcinogenic agents & by UV light
- expressed during squamous differentiation of epidermal keratinocytes
