Function
- tryptase is major neutral protease present in mast cells
- secreted upon the coupled activation-degranulation of mast cells
- immunoprotective role during bacterial infection
- role in protection against K.pneumoniae infection (putative)
- preferential cleavage: Arg-|-Xaa, Lys-|-Xaa, but with more restricted specificity than trypsin
Structure
Compartment
- secreted
- released from secretory granules upon mast cell activation
Polymorphism
- two alleles; beta-II & beta-III which differ by 3 residues
