Function

• catalyzes the phosphorylation of sphingosine to form sphingosine 1-phosphate, a lipid mediator with both intra- & extracellular functions
• also acts on D-erythro-dihydrosphingosine, D-erythro-sphingosine & L-threo-dihydrosphingosine

ATP + sphinganine <--> ADP + sphinganine 1-phosphate

ATP + sphingosine <--> ADP + sphingosine 1-phosphate

Cofactor: Mg+2 (putative)

Kinetic parameters:

• KM=3.4 uM for sphingosine
• Optimum pH is 7.5
