glycine N-methyltransferase (GNMT)

Function
- catalyzes methylation of glycine by using S-adenosylmethionine (AdoMet) to form N-methylglycine (sarcosine) with concomitant production of S-adenosylhomocysteine (AdoHcy)
- possible role in regulation of tissue concentration of AdoMet & of metabolism of methionine
S-adenosyl-L-methionine + glycine = S-adenosyl-L-homocysteine + sarcosine
Structure
- homotetramer
- belongs to the glycine N-methyltransferase family
Compartment
Expression
abundant in liver
Pathology
- defects in GNMT are the cause of glycine N-methyltransferase deficiency
