Function
- reduces all-trans-retinal & 9-cis retinal
- catalyzes oxidation of all-trans-retinol with NADP as cofactor, but with much lower efficiency
- reduces alkyl phenyl ketones & alpha-dicarbonyl compounds with aromatic rings, including pyrimidine-4-aldehyde, 3-benzoylpyridine, 4-benzoylpyridine, menadione & 4-hexanoylpyridine
- no activity towards aliphatic aldehydes & ketones
- inhibited by kaempferol, quercetin, genistein & myristic acid
R-CHOH-R' + NADP+ = R-CO-R' + NADPH
