• reduced form of NADP
• provides reducing equivalents, 2 electrons & 1 proton for oxidation reduction reactions, involved in:
  • regeneration of reduced glutathione
  • cholesterol synthesis
  • fatty acid chain elongation
  • cytochrome P450 hydroxylations
• ~60% of NADPH is produced by the pentose phosphate pathway
