Function
- asymmetrically cleaves beta-carotene at the 9',10' double bond to form beta-apo-10'-carotenal & beta-ionone
- also cleaves lycopene
- apocarotenals formed may be precursors for biosynthesis of retinoic acid
Cofactor: binds 1 Fe+2 ion per subunit (putative)
Structure
belongs to the carotenoid oxygenase family
Compartment
Alternative splicing
named isoforms=3
Expression
- highly expressed in retinal pigment epithelium
- also expressed in stomach, small intestine, liver, testis, kidney, adrenal gland, pancreas, heart, skeletal muscle & prostate (at protein level)
