• catalyzes the cleavage of the pyrrol ring of tryptophan & incorporates both atoms of a molecule of oxygen
• the enzyme is unusual in that it requires an exogenous source of superoxide
• in liver, tryptophan-2,3-dioxygenase facilitates formation of N-formylkynurenine from tryptophan

L-tryptophan + O2 <--> N-formyl-L-kynurenine

Cofactor: binds 1 heme group per subunit
