Structure

• composed of three structural domains:
  • large globular N- terminal domain responsible for motor activity of kinesin (hydrolyzes ATP & binds microtubule)
  • central alpha-helical coiled coil domain that mediates heavy chain dimerization
  • small globular C-terminal domain which interacts with other proteins (such as the kinesin light chains), vesicles & membranous organelles
• belongs to the kinesin-like protein family, kinesin subfamily
• contains 1 kinesin-motor domain
