Etiology

Clinical manifestations

  • an episode of illness that resembles mania, but is less intense & less disabling
  • euphoric mood
  • unrealistic optimism
  • increased speech & activity
  • decreased need for sleep
  • for some, there is increased creativity
    • others evidence poor judgment & impaired function

Differential diagnosis

  • in contrast to a manic episode, during a hypomanic episode, functioning is preserved well enough to function at work or socially & does not require hospitalization
