Function
- catalyzes the cross-linking of proteins & the conjugation of polyamines to proteins
- responsible for the later stages of cell envelope formation in the epidermis & the hair follicle
protein glutamine + alkylamine <--> protein N(5)-alkylglutamine + NH3
Cofactor: binds 1 Ca+2 per subunit (putative)
Structure
- consists of two polypeptide chains, which are synthesized as a precursor form of a single polypeptide activated by proteolytic processing
- belongs to the transglutaminase superfamily transglutaminase family82 1993
