Pathology
-occurs when a meibomian gland is blocked
- chronic sterile granulomatous meibomian gland inflammation.
Clinical manifestations
- subacute tender or painless eyelid lesion
- conjunctival irritation may occur
- minimally erythematous, may appear orange-red in color
Differential diagnosis
- internal hordeolum (red, tender bump, may leak purulent discharge)
Management
- warm/hot compresses
- treat concomitant blepharitis
- referral to ophthalmologist for incision & curettage for persistent chalazion
