Introduction
symptoms of schizophrenia with a prominent affective component
Classification
- in DSM-5 & ICD-10, schizoaffective disorder is in the same diagnostic class as schizophrenia, but not in the same class as mood disorders
- schizoaffective disorder diagnosis can no longer be used for first episode psychosis
Clinical manifestations
- symptoms of depression or mania are at least as prominent as psychotic symptoms
Management
- see schizophrenia
- caution in treating depression
- antidepressant may trigger manic attack
