egophony

Introduction

A form of bronchophony in which the spoken syllables have a nasal quality.

Etiology

  • egophony is often the result of a compressed lung below a pleural effusion or pulmonary consolidation

Clinical manifestations

  • normally a muffled long E sound is heard
  • when the E is heard as A with a nasal quality, egophony is present
