Introduction

Abnormal movements resulting from cerebellar disease or posterior column dysfunction. Specific tests include:

• finger to nose
  • with cerebellar disease, an action tremor is present
  • with eyes closed, tests proprioception (posterior columns)
• heel to shin
  • cerebellar disease
    • heal to knee is jerky, the knee is frequently overshot
    • the slide down the shin is accompanied by an action tremor
  • posterior column disease
    • heal may have difficulty finding shin
    • the slide down the shin weaves from side to side & may roll of the shin
