Introduction
Rotation of the tibia on the femur.
Indications
- test for meniscal injury
Procedure
- with the patient supine, the knee & hip flexed initially at 90 degrees, holding the lower leg with one hand under the foot & the other hand under the medial knee to support the leg, employ passive knee & hip extension, simultaneously applying either external or internal rotation at the ankle
Interpretation
- a palpable or audible pop or click with medial or lateral knee pain at or near full extension is a positive sign
- medial knee pain with external rotation indicates injury to the medial meniscus
- lateral knee pain with internal rotation indicates lateral meniscus injury
