Etiology
- pigmentation of the fingernail (brown nail) also involving the proximal nail fold is suggestive of acral lentiginous melanoma
- melanoma until proven otherwise
Clinical manifestations
- brown-black discoloration of the proximal & lateral nail folds
- brown-black pigmentation of the nail matrix, nail bed & nail plate obliterating the lunula
- nail plate may show dystrophic changes
