Indications

• gastric cancer
• partial gastrectomy for duodenal ulcer
• gastric ulcer refractory to medical therapy

Laboratory

• monitor serum vitamin B12 in patients who have had proximal or total gastrectomy

Diagnostic procedures

• lifelong surveillance with upper GI endoscopy for recurrence in patients with partial gastrectomy due to gastric cancer

Complications

• increased risk of pulmonary tuberculosis
• increased risk of vitamin B12 deficiency
• dumping syndrome
• blind loop syndrome
