Characteristics
- sheets, ropes, pastes, granules or powders that absorb exudate
- most are composed of starch copolymers
Indications
- moderate to high exudates
- partial or full-thickness wounds
- granular or necrotic wounds
- pressure ulcers
- venous ulcers
- diabetic ulcers
- arterial ulcers
- used as a filler with other dressings
Contraindications
- dry wounds
- deep tunneling wounds or deep undermining wounds
Advantages
- autolysis
- conforming
- moist environment
- absorbs exudate
- pain reduction
- no reinjury at removal
- up to 7 days wear time
Disadvantages
- requires secondary dressing
Notes
Helpful hints:
- wounds should be filled 1/3 to 2/3 full
- absorptive capacity varies among fillers
