Introduction

Whisper 3 letters of numbers at a distance of 1 foot behind each ear being tested.

Patients fail if they are unable to hear 50% after 3 repetitions.

If performed under standard conditions:[2]

  • sensitivity 90-100% (adults) 80-96% (children)
  • specificity 80-87% (adults) 90-98% (children)

Inter-examiner reliability high[2]
