Classification

• wooden canes must be custom fitted for length
• aluminum canes are adjustable
• offset canes allow the patient's weight to be distributed over the shaft of the cane

Indications

• osteoarthritis of the knee
• osteoarthritis of the hip
• peripheral neuropathy

Notes

• provides lateral support
• assists with balance & propioception
• reduces weight-bearing on opposite leg
• helps with stability but offers no way to rest
