Etiology
- violent injury resulting in an unsupported head moving rapidly backward & forward with hyperextension & hyper- flexion of neck muscles
Pathology
- does NOT imply any specific pathology
Complications
- psychological trauma can be significant
- carotid artery dissection
Management
- patient education & reassurance
- physical therapy of little benefit[4]
- management of carotid artery dissection if indicated
