Etiology
Pathology
- incomplete cervical spinal cord injury
- transmission of signals (afferent & efferent) between brain & the spinal cord below the site of trauma is affected but not entirely blocked
- damage to the corticospinal tract
Clinical manifestations
- impairment in the arms & hands &, to a lesser extent, in the legs
- paralysis &/or loss of fine control of movements
- sensory loss below the site of the spinal injury
- loss of bladder control may also occur
Management
- no cure; no standard course of treatment
- glucocorticoids
- surgery
- rest
- prognosis is variable
- early treatment may improve outcome
- recover substantial function after their initial injury
- ability to walk is recovered in most of the cases, but some impairment may remain.
