French-American-British (FAB) Classification:

• refractory anemia (RA)
  • circulating blasts < 1%
  • bone marrow blasts < 5%
• refractory anemia with ringed sideroblasts (RARS)
  • ringed sideroblasts (bone marrow) > 15%
  • bone marrow blasts < 5%
• refractory anemia with excess blasts (RAEB)
  • circulating blasts < 5%
  • bone marrow blasts 5-20%
• chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML)
  • monocytosis > 1000/uL
  • bone marrow blasts < 20%
• refractory anemia with excess blasts in transformation (RAEB-T)
  • circulating blasts > 5%
  • bone marrow blasts 21-30%

WHO classification:

• refractory cytopenia with unilineage dysplasia
• refractory cytopenia with multilineage dysplasia
• refractory anemia with ringed sideroblasts (RARS)
• refractory anemia with excess blasts-1 (RAEB-1)
• refractory anemia with excess blasts-2 (RAEB-2)
• myelodysplastic syndrome with chromosome 5q deletion
• myelodysplastic syndrome unclassified
