French-American-British (FAB) Classification:
- refractory anemia (RA)
- circulating blasts < 1%
- bone marrow blasts < 5%
- refractory anemia with ringed sideroblasts (RARS)
- ringed sideroblasts (bone marrow) > 15%
- bone marrow blasts < 5%
- refractory anemia with excess blasts (RAEB)
- circulating blasts < 5%
- bone marrow blasts 5-20%
- chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML)
- monocytosis > 1000/uL
- bone marrow blasts < 20%
- refractory anemia with excess blasts in transformation (RAEB-T)
- circulating blasts > 5%
- bone marrow blasts 21-30%
WHO classification:
- refractory cytopenia with unilineage dysplasia
- refractory cytopenia with multilineage dysplasia
- refractory anemia with ringed sideroblasts (RARS)
- refractory anemia with excess blasts-1 (RAEB-1)
- refractory anemia with excess blasts-2 (RAEB-2)
- myelodysplastic syndrome with chromosome 5q deletion
