Epidemiology

• older patients with degenerative disc disease
• can be seen in younger patients

Pathology

• prolapse of the nucleus pulposus through the lumbar vertebral bony endplate into the spongiosa of an adjacent lumbar vertebrae.

Radiology

• X-ray of lumbar spine
• MRI of lumbar spine
