chronic idiopathic ataxic neuropathy

Clinical manifestations

• slow progressive
• distal paresthesias
• sensory ataxia, pseudoathetosis
• areflexia
• strength is normal
• marked loss of propioception
• loss of kinesthetic sensation distal to proximal
• paresthesias common
• uncomfortable pulling or stretching sensation
• often confined to bed or wheel chair

Laboratory

• serum IgM monoclonal gammopathy common
• polyclonal gammopathy common

Management

• response to immunosuppressants is poor
