Introduction
Gait disturbance resulting from loss of sensation in the lower extremities.
Etiology
- abnormalities in the
- peripheral nerves
- dorsal roots
- dorsal columns of the spinal cord
- medial lemnisci
Clinical manifestations
- loss of joint position sense
- loss of vibration sense
- loss of light touch sensation
- positive Rhomberg's sign
- wide-based gait
- legs often lifted higher than necessary at hips
- legs flug forward & outward in abrupt motions
- steps vary in length
- feet often 'slap' on floor
