Epidemiology
- rare
Pathology
- ectodermal dysplasia
- basal epidermal skin cells affected
- condensed keratin filaments
- perinuclear keratin filament retraction
Genetics
- autosomal dominant
- associated with premature termination mutations in KRT14 gene
Clinical manifestations
- complete absence of dermatoglyphics
- reticulate hyperpigmention of the skin
- starts at about the age of 2 years without a preceding inflammatory stage
- tends to slowly disappear with age
- palmoplantar keratoderma
- hypohydrosis
- diminished sweat gland function
- discomfort provoked by heat
- in some patients:
- enamel & dental anomalies in some patients
- skin blistering in some patients
- distorted nail plates
