Epidemiology

• common in the Mari population, a large aboriginal Finno-Ugric population in the Volga-Ural region of Russia

Genetics

• autosomal recessive
• associated with defects in LIPH gene

Clinical manifestations

• congenital hypotrichosis of scalp hairs
• any hair present being wiry & twisted
