Introduction
A procedure for viewing the rectum & distal sigmoid colon. 25 cm protoscopes are used.
Indications
- evaluation for cervical carcinoma metastasis
- inspection of hemorrhoids or rectal polyps
- foreign body
Contraindications

Complications

Caution:
- 10% of patients have combustible levels of hydrogen & methane in the bowel
- do NOT use electrocautery during sigmoidoscopy because of risk of explosion
