Herbal Alternatives for Menopause (HALT) study

Introduction
1 year, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 351 women, age 45-55 years, with 2 or more vasomotor symptoms/day.
Random assignment to:
- black cohosh
- multibotanical containing black cohosh
- same multibotanical plus dietary soy counseling
- standard hormonal-replacement therapy (HRT)
- placebo
Conclusions:
- more abnormal uterine bleeding in HRT group
- HRT decreased serum FSH & increased serum estradiol
- black cohosh, alone or in combination, had no effect on vaginal epithelium, endometrium or reproductive hormones
