5-45 mL PO QHS, 5-15 mL dose for child
Pharmacokinetics
- absorption from the GI tract is minimal
- 30-60% of the emulsion may be absorbed from the intestine, especially in combination with docusate (Colace)
- bowel relief generally occurs within 6-8 hours
- elimination: Not absorbed.
Adverse effects
- with long-term therapy can decrease absorption of fat-soluble vitamins
- aspiration in patients at risk
- may cause mineral oil leaking from rectum
Drug interactions
- docusate in combination causes increased systemic absorption of mineral oil & may lead to fatty liver
