Epidemiology
- a family of endogenous intestinal bacteria
- among the most abundant bacteria in human gut microbiota
Laboratory
- obligate anaerobe, variably spore-forming bacteria
- ferment diverse plant polysaccharides to short-chain fatty acids (butyrate & acetate) & alcohols (ethanol)
- may protect against colon cancer in humans by producing butyrate
