lunate dislocation

Etiology

• acute traumatic injury
  • fall on outstretched hand
  • automobile accident

Pathology

• ulnar deviation & hyperextension of the wrist

Radiology

• radiographs of the hand & wrist
  • stress radiographs with radial & ulnar deviation can be helpful
    • digital block prior to stress radiographs?
  • widening of space between the lunate & scaphoid
  • lateral view may show "spilled teacup sign" when the lunate is not in line with the radius & capitate

Complications

• injury to the median nerve is the most common complication
• distal radius fractures, scaphoid fractures

Management

• consultation with a hand surgeon
