Etiology
- diabetic amyotrophy (2/3)
Epidemiology
- 4 cases per 100,000 population
Pathology
- microvasculitis with ischemic nerve injury involving the lumbosacral plexus & nerve roots
Clinical manifestations
- acute or subacute painful neuropathy
- painful lower-extremity presentations & muscle weakness
- a few cases sensory-predominant
- generally unilateral: asymmetric when bilateral
- generally proximal > distal (sometimes both)
- cervical or thoracic involvement also may occur
