lumbosacral radiculoplexus neuropathy

Etiology

• diabetic amyotrophy (2/3)

Epidemiology

• 4 cases per 100,000 population

Pathology

• microvasculitis with ischemic nerve injury involving the lumbosacral plexus & nerve roots

Clinical manifestations

• acute or subacute painful neuropathy
• painful lower-extremity presentations & muscle weakness
• a few cases sensory-predominant
• generally unilateral: asymmetric when bilateral
• generally proximal > distal (sometimes both)
• cervical or thoracic involvement also may occur
